Barack Obama

Posted: Sun 9th November 2008 4.43 PM

Barack Obama was elected as the next US president this week. But what does this news mean for Israel?

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said 'I have no doubt that the special relationship that exists between the two countries will continue and strengthen in the period of the Obama administration.'

However Israel warned that engaging in talks with Iran, (which Obama says he intends to do) would be seen as a sign of weakness in the Middle East.

"We live in a neighbourhood in which sometimes dialogue -- in a situation where you have brought sanctions, and you then shift to dialogue -- is liable to be interpreted as weakness," Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said. When asked if she supported any U.S. dialogue with Iran, Livni replied: "The answer is no."

PA leaders have said the assumption in Ramallah is Obama will set in motion plans for the establishment of a Palestinian State. Hamas leaders are also said to be satisfied with the Obama victory.

Many Americans, however, have been accused of over-reacting during Obama’s campaign. Some have referred to him as “god” or even “the messiah.” There have been reports that Obama’s senior advisors are now doing their best to ‘lower expectations’ amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters have unrealistic hopes of what the new president can achieve.

As Christians we hope and pray for Godly leadership, men and women who will love Israel and stand with them. And while bringing true peace to the Middle East may well be impossible for any man, with Jesus all things are possible. For now, we must be obedient to God’s word.

"I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" (1 Timothy 2:1-3).
