The UK Salutes Israel

Salute to Israel45,000 people gathered in London last weekend to show their support for Israel and celebrate the nation’s 60th year. British Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks said “It is our way of expressing our love for Israel, our thanksgiving for the past and our hopes for the future,"

The afternoon started with a parade of floats, following a route starting at the Ritz Hotel and finishing at Trafalgar Square. The 50-strong floats, led by a group of war veterans were joined by dancers and marching bands as the public showed their solidarity with and support of Israel. The parade also acted as an expression of unity within the UK Jewish community, transcending religious and political affiliations.

In Trafalgar square a number of speakers addressed the crowd. British Education Minister Ed Balls said “it is a great honour for me to join with you here for this 60th birthday party to celebrate one of the most momentous events of the 20th Century, the formation of the State of Israel.” Israeli Ambassador to Britain, Ron Proser said “It warms our hearts to see thousands of blue and white flags filling London's streets."

Also in Trafalgar square, the crowd enjoyed music from Liel, an 18-year-old international artist, song-writer and peace symbol. Israeli punk band Useless ID and South London Jewish rapper Antithesis also performed.
The City of Manchester also held a parade and party in salute of Israel as more than 2,000 jubilant Israel supporters marched along the streets of Prestwich in support of the Jewish state.
