Archaeologists discover 3,000 year old Hebrew text in Jerusalem

Posted: Sat 8th November 2008 9.29 PM

Archaeologists in Jerusalem have reported finding the oldest Hebrew text ever. The ancient writing was found on a 15 by 15 centimeter pottery shard! It has been carbon dated to between 1000BC and 975BC, which predates even the Dead Sea Scrolls!

So far experts have only identified a few words, including "judge," "slave" and "king", it may take months to fully translate the text.

The finding has symbolic value for Israel. Other items discovered at the dig indicate there was probably a strong king and central government in Jerusalem during the period that David ruled Zion and ancient Israel.

Hebrew University archaeologist Amihai Mazar said the inscription was "very important," as it is the longest proto-Canaanite text ever found.

The dig may continue for another 10 years as only 4% of the site has been fully explored so far. We at Isrelate.com will keep you up to date with all further developments.
