Two Israeli sites have been named as possible 'Wonders of the World' in a new search which seeks to elect seven world wonders of nature.

The New Seven Wonders Foundation has announced a total of 261 natural and heritage sites across the world that have made it to the quarter final.

The Dead Sea was named in the Multinational Sites category, while Ein Gedi was included in the National Sites category. Both Israeli sites will compete with places such as the Grand Canyon, Loch Ness, Mont Blanc and Niagara Falls on continuing to the semi finals.

The competition is expected to attract billions of voters from all over the world over the next two years. The 21 finalists will be announced in July this year, with the 7 winners announced in 2011.
