Barack vows never to compromise Israel's security

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has just completed a two day visit to Israel. On Tuesday he met with Defence Minister Ehud Barak where there was, according to the defence ministry, a "vigorous and intense discussion touching on all the basic issues and future challenges facing Israel and the free world in the region."

Speaking about his visit, Obama said "The most important thing for me to share is the historic and special relationship between the United States and Israel, one that cannot be broken." After already declaring that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided" last month, Obama, after speaking with Benjamin Netanyahu said "I'll never compromise Israel's security. Terrorism is not theoretical, it's right here a block away from this hotel, and it must be fought with full force and strength."

Obama recognises that the task of bringing peace to Israel is a difficult one. "It's unrealistic to expect that a U.S. president alone can suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace in this region." he says. Indeed, he has attracted criticism from some Jews in Israel, many disliking his support of a two state solution. Furthermore, rumours being spread around the internet highlighting his middle name 'Hussein' and saying he is a secret Jihadi haven't helped his campaign, though few take such claims seriously.

Whatever the politics of the situation, as Christians we are called to 'pray for the peace of Jerusalem' (Psalm122:6) Why not check out our Prayer Channel now and get involved in praying for Israel?
