Last January I got to visit Israel with one of my fellow members from thebandwithnoname.  He’d never been to the Holy Land before, and since he knew that I grew up out there he wanted me to show him around.  Woo hoo!  (I didn’t need much convincing)  We had a great time checking out all the sites – the Old City, Dead Sea, Masada, Jordan River, Galillee and of course my favourite spot in all of Jerusalem… the Garden Tomb.

I don’t really know what it is about the Garden Tomb that has such a magnetic draw for me.  It can’t be simply because there are several good archaeological reasons for believing that it’s the site where Jesus was buried for three days and came back to life again.  I know a few very highly informed people would prefer to believe it’s not the authentic site – including a few of the guides who work there themselves!  It can’t be because of the great gift shop they have there.  Those are a dime a dozen in a nation where tourism is still one of the biggest industries fuelling a struggling economy.  It can’t be because of all the weird and wonderful fellow brothers and sisters in Christ I always end up meeting there from all over the world.  With the amount of travelling I do, I get to come across these types of people all the time.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that it’s such a quiet serene spot to retreat to.  Jerusalem is a very noisy city.  Tons of traffic with crazy drivers honking their horns constantly and workers drilling on construction projects with massive cranes.  Even in the ‘holy sites’ you can always guarantee there will be a few loud prayers or chants being offered up along with all the typical bells and smells.  But when you step foot into the Garden Tomb compound, it really does feel as though you’re entering a different world.  The garden itself is very refreshing with several exotic trees and plants to enjoy.  The birds are there chirping away, providing the perfect soundtrack for total relaxation.  There are plenty of benches for you to sit on and pray or read the Bible or just quietly meditate on what God is saying to you through the nature that surrounds you.  All in all, it’s just a great place to have some one-on-one time with the Holy Spirit.  And lets face it, he never disappoints.

If you’ve never been to Israel before, seriously, you’ve got to check it out.  There is so much cool stuff going on out there, and being in the land of the Bible will massively encourage you in your faith.  It helps to colour your understanding of Scripture and gives a great backdrop to some of the stories you used to listen to in Sunday school…

And whatever you do, don’t forget to check out the Garden Tomb!
